How Do You Know Your Home Needs a Rewire?

After years of working on properties across Hertfordshire and Essex, these are the warning signs we see again and again. If you've spotted any of these in your home, get in touch — we'll come and take a proper look.

Old round-pin sockets or fabric-covered cables

If you've still got round-pin sockets or cloth-insulated wiring, your electrics are likely pre-1960s and well past their safe lifespan.

A wooden-backed fusebox

The old "wylex" wooden fuseboxes are a tell-tale sign. They don't meet modern safety standards and offer no RCD protection.

Warm or discoloured sockets

Sockets that feel warm to the touch, or have browning around the pin holes, suggest dangerous loose connections behind the wall.

Frequent fuse blowing or tripping

If your fuses keep blowing or breakers keep tripping, it's usually a sign of overloaded or deteriorating wiring underneath.

A burning or fishy smell

A "fishy" smell coming from sockets or your fusebox is the smell of overheating plastic — never ignore this one.

Lights dimming when appliances kick in

If lights dim when the kettle or shower comes on, your wiring may not be handling modern electrical demand.

"Green Goo" — A Hidden Sign Your 60s–80s Home Needs a Rewire

One of the most common (and overlooked) warning signs we see on older rewires. Watch Jamie explain what green goo is, what causes it, and why it matters.

Transcript: "Just got a short little video for you here to show you green goo. So we've got green goo in this light switch. If your home was wired between the 1960s and 1980s and you're getting flickering lights or unexplained tripping, it's probably a good idea to get an EICR carried out to see if your house is affected by green goo. It's caused by heat breakdown — a chemical reaction within the cables."

How We Work in Your Home

A rewire is dusty, disruptive work — but it doesn't have to feel that way. We've invested in proper kit and built processes that keep your home clean, safe and stress-free throughout.

Dust extraction at the source

We use professional Metabo wall-chasing tools with built-in dust extraction — sucking up plaster dust as it's created rather than letting it spread through your home. The difference is night and day compared to traditional chasing.

Neat, accessible cable runs

Cable routing through lofts, under floors and behind walls is done methodically and tidied as we go. Every cable is clipped, supported and labelled so future electricians can pick up the job easily — and so your insulation stays where it should.

Outdoor & weatherproof installations

Outbuildings, garden offices, EV chargers and external sockets all installed to current weatherproofing standards. We work in all weathers to get your job done on schedule — even if it means evening installs in winter.

Old fusebox to modern consumer unit

The big upgrade most homeowners notice. We safely disconnect the old unit, install a modern 18th Edition consumer unit with full RCD/RCBO protection, surge protection, and clearly-labelled circuits — and dispose of the old kit responsibly.

Common Rewire Questions Answered

These are the questions homeowners ask us most often. Got a question that's not here? Just give us a call.

How long does a full house rewire take?
Timescales depend on property size. A typical 1-2 bed flat takes around 4 working days, a 3-bed house around 6 days, and a 4-bed house around 8 days. We'll confirm the exact timescale before we start so you know exactly what to expect.
Will I lose power during the rewire?
Yes, there will be periods without power while we work, but we'll let you know in advance each day so you can plan around it. We isolate only the circuits we're working on where possible to keep disruption to a minimum.
How much does a house rewire cost?
Our rewires start from £5,000 + VAT for a 1-2 bed flat, £7,500 + VAT for a 3-bed house, and £8,500 + VAT for a 4-bed house. Every property is different so we always provide a fixed written quote after our free survey — no hidden extras.
How messy is a house rewire?
We keep mess to a minimum and clean up at the end of every day. A rewire is dusty work, but we protect your home throughout — dust sheets down, shoe covers worn, and a full clean at the end. Most customers are surprised by how clean and tidy we keep things.
Do I need to be home during the rewire?
Not always. Many customers go about their normal day while we work. We'll agree what works best for you at the pre-site visit. We're DBS checked and fully insured for your peace of mind.
Can I make changes once the rewire has started?
Yes — just let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate any changes. Clear communication is at the heart of everything we do, and we'd rather get it right for you than rush ahead.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes — all our work is fully tested, certified and guaranteed for your peace of mind. As a NAPIT registered firm, your work is also covered by the NAPIT Insurance-Backed Guarantee, and we're a Which? Trusted Trader.
What is green goo in electrical wiring?
Green goo is a chemical reaction caused by heat breakdown within cables from the 1960s to 1980s. It's commonly found in light switches, sockets and junction boxes in older homes. If you've got green goo, flickering lights or unexplained tripping in a home from that era, it's a sign your wiring is degrading and you should get an EICR carried out to assess whether a rewire is needed.
